Scandinavian Method
Type of wood
Wood is a noble, ecological material. Cedar is particularly appreciated
for Scandinavian-style log constructions. In the Gaspé
Peninsula, we are fortunate to be surrounded by Eastern White
Cedar. This species is known for its æsthetic, resistant
and durable qualities. Other timber species, such as spruce and
pine, are also perfectly suitable for this type of construction.
Log selection
The trees are selected with care in the forest. We choose the
straightest ones with even diameters from one end to end. Next,
the bark is stripped from the logs, with care being taken to make
sure each log maintains its original shape. This is what gives
our buildings their unique appearance..
Insulation
To provide adequate insulation, the logs must be from 11 to 13
inches in diameter. Wood has an average insulating property of
RSI-1.8 per inch, so a log have an 11-inch diameter to meet the
Québec standard of R-20. Also, because no nails are used,
the building settles evenly as the wood dries, increasing its
already remarkable weather tightness.
Each log is individually adjusted by hand using a transfer log
scribe. But the tool used most often for this complex assembly
is the chainsaw. Like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, one by one,
each log is cut, grooved and assembled with great care and knowledge.
The weather tight fit of each log is the structure’s greatest
quality, although its acoustical properties are sure to enchant
the music lover as well.
Heat travels
naturally along the wood fibres to the heart of the log thus increasing
its thermal value, as you can see in the drawing (to the left,
to the right, above, below, opposite).
